Shetland Wool Roving, Homegrown Natural Colors 4 oz.

$ 18.00

We currently have 5 of this selection in stock.

Colorado-grown Shetland roving in 4 oz hanks, from our flock of heritage Shetland sheep. While there is a huge range in Shetland fleeces, from coarse to fine, we have been breeding Shetlands for 15 years to produce softer fleeces with a good handle and staple length -perfect for spinning, Fair Isle knitting, and felting. Their natural rainbow of colors creates a palette of choices for your next fiber project.

We are excited to now offer not only Colorado-grown wool but Colorado-milled, for now just in our gray roving.

Color Notes:

  • Shaela - a lovely dark color with lighter fibers running through it.
  • Musket - a nice warm brown with some lighter fibers.
  • Light gray - grown and processed in Colorado and has noticeable variation in shades of gray. So soft!
  • Variegated gray - grown and processed in Colorado. This has great variation in shades, from dark gray to very light and everything in between. While we don't consider this roving "coarse," it is from our more primitive fleeces that have a more pronounced dual-coat. A lovely spin!

We sustainably produce this wool on our three-generation family farm, using rotational grazing, organically produced hay, solar power, non-lethal predator control, and organic methods. We are participating providers with the Shave 'em to Save 'em program from the Livestock Conservancy and our Shetland roving qualifies for a passport sticker (please request a sticker if interested).

Three colors of Shetland

I received Shetland wool in three colors: Light Gray, Musket (gray-brown), and Shaela (Charcoal). So far I have spun only the first two and they are quite different. Of course, different animals and different scouring and milling techniques have an influence. Both are lovely. The light gray has a bit more lanolin and tiny amounts of vegetable matter. I was able to spin a beautiful rustic yarn. The Musket is spinning very fine and drafts easily.

The customer service from Dyer's Wool is very high quality and I would recommend them to anyone.
